Overlanding Utah in Winter | Goblin Valley, Factory Butte, Moonscape & Bentonite Hills (Part 2)

In Part 2 of our winter overlanding trip through Utah, we dive deeper into some of the most unique and otherworldly landscapes we’ve ever explored.

After leaving the Valley of the Gods, we head toward Goblin Valley, where the terrain feels more like another planet than southern Utah. From there, we cross the wide open expanse of Factory Butte, navigating bentonite-rich terrain before continuing on to Moonscape Overlook and the Bentonite Hills—places that truly force you to slow down and take it all in.

This leg of the trip was all about exploration, quiet moments, and enjoying the freedom of overlanding—just my wife and I, traveling at our own pace and taking the long way whenever possible.

At camp, we wind down by making pizza from scratch and cooking it on the Tembo Tusk Skottle, turning camp into home even in the middle of the desert.

If you missed Part 1, be sure to check it out to see how the trip began, from Monument Valley through Goosenecks State Park and camping in the Valley of the Gods.

Winter Overlanding in Utah | Valley of the Gods to Muley Point (Part 1)

’Twas the night after Christmas… and the road was calling.

This is Part 1 of a multi-part winter overlanding series documenting a trip my wife and I took through southern Utah, starting the day after Christmas.

In this chapter, we travel through Monument Valley, stop at Goosenecks State Park, then air down and hit dirt as we enter Valley of the Gods, off-roading our way to camp below Rooster Butte, arriving just as the rain cleared and a rainbow capped off an unforgettable evening.

Cold nights gave us a chance to test a new Vevor diesel heater, which performed flawlessly, while campfire cooking and fresh bread on the Tembo Tusk Skottle rounded out a perfect Day One.

The next morning, we finished the Valley of the Gods loop, climbed Moki Dugway, and took in the views from Muley Point, before heading toward even more otherworldly terrain.

This video is about the magic of the journey, quiet moments, and the reset that only the road can provide.

We Had Never Been Here Before: The Perfect Eastern Sierra Campsite

This one was special. After years of chasing fall colors along Highway 395, we finally hit it just right.

We started near Virginia Lakes, where glowing aspens framed the granite peaks, then climbed toward Kavanaugh Ridge, off-roaded into Dunderburg Meadow, and found what might be our best campsite ever — just us, a quiet pond, and total stillness. Sunset lit the trees on fire, dinner cooked on the Tembo Tusk Skottle, and morning reflections made it hard to leave.

From there, we explored above Mono Lake, enjoyed lunch at Mono Lake Park, and ended our trip above Grant Lake, finding solitude and sweeping fall views away from the crowds.

Trips like this remind us why we keep coming back to the Eastern Sierra.

And speaking of traditions — Overlanding for Warriors is happening November 7–9, 2025 in Lone Pine, benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project. Thanks to your support, we’ve already raised nearly $30,000. A few tickets remain — grab yours at 395JNKY.com and join us for a weekend of adventure and purpose.

Exploring Big Whitney Meadow & Cottonwood Lakes | Backpacking the High Sierra

For the first time, I traded the driver’s seat for a backpack and hit the trail deep in California’s Eastern Sierra — alongside my daughter and her boyfriend. Months of training and planning led to an unforgettable journey through Big Whitney Meadow, Soldier Lake, Cottonwood Pass, and the Cottonwood Lakes basin, chasing golden trout and soaking in every mile.

After years of exploring this country on four wheels, backpacking it offered a whole new perspective — and every step was worth it.

If you’ve ever thought about backpacking the Eastern Sierra, this is a glimpse into why it’s so special.

Joshua Tree National Park: A 2-Door Jeep Overnight Escape - Adventure Under the Perseid Skies

IMPORTANT UPDATE AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS VIDEO REGARDING THIS YEARS VETERANS WEEKEND - OVERLANDING FOR WARRIORS EVENT.  In this video we head out to Joshua Tree National Park for some exploring and off-roading.  We visited some of the more popular sights in the park before we head outside of the park to find our camp for the night.  And we arrived just before dark.  We barely had time to finish our dinner before the big show started.  The Perseid Meteor shower was a thrill to experience and we can wait for the next meteor shower to do this again someday.  Although it didn't quite live up to the hype I had anticipated to to be in my head, it was still unlike anything I had seen before.  We hope everyone is doing well and are getting out on your own adventures.  To learn more about us, please subscribe to my YouTube channel by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Pociusdl...  and follow us on Instagram here:  https://www.instagram.com/395jnky/?hl=en  Please visit my Amazon Store & take a look around at some of the gear we use here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/395jnky?ref=inf_pub_395jnky  You can also purchase your Craft Beef Jerky, T-Shirts & Tembo Tusk products here:  https://395jnky.com  Thank you all for the support!!!
